RKO’S Column

Ron Oetting

From modest roots in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I’ve enjoyed a lifelong career in the fields of advertising, publishing, commercial printing and marketing. While living in the Washington, DC area in the early 1980’s, and working for the Gannett Company – which was launching the first full-color national daily newspaper, USA Today – I took a broader interest in our national political system, and how it works (or fails to work, depending on your observations). I returned to my Indiana hometown area in 1991, and bought a small weekly community newspaper. When the political season started to heat up in August, 2015, I began writing daily political satires which culminated in the publication of my first book, Political Poetry by RKO – Volume I. Since then, I’ve continued to write a ‘poem a day’ and post it on Facebook. Now, with what will almost certainly be bountiful fodder for the next few years, I’m looking forward to more political satire. I hope you’ll also enjoy this new column as I submit tongue-in-cheek and/or thought-provoking commentaries on the condition of our society today. And I invite you to share this political neophyte’s views with your friends and neighbors. Who knows what kinds of deliberations it might incite over an ice cold beer, a smooth red wine, or a raucous rum and cola. Cheers!

Sisters

Sisters

Sisters are the best. I've been especially blessed. I've had not ONE - but, three; and they've been good to me. We got through childhood. Some times were bad; some times were good. And, as we grew - as siblings do - we all had livings to pursue. My sisters all became...

Political Poetry by RKO

The vitriolic comments are posted everyday. We call each other ugly names; don't temper what we say. In fact, we seem to pride ourselves on how mean we can be! We think that makes us "smart", or brings celebrity. It's now part of our culture. We think we're really...

When Someone Dies…..

When Someone Dies…..

When someone dies, they always say, "She's in a better place. Her pain and suffering is gone. It's all part of God's grace." So, is that "better place" a world far different from our own, where streets, I'm told, are paved with gold, where hate and war's unknown? I...

Two Minutes Hate

Two Minutes Hate

Winston Smith may have suffered through what millions of us are suffering through today. I wonder what he would think if he were to return from "1984" and enter our 'real-life' world of 2017? Today, in our cosmopolitan world, we're surrounded by hate, greed and...

The Evil Among Us

The Evil Among Us

This morning, I received two e-mails from two Facebook 'friends'. Both e-mails contained the identical image: a photo of Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz" asking the scarecrow this question: "But how do you talk without a brain?" The scarecrow's reply over the first...

BLOOD SOAKED

BLOOD SOAKED

Last night I watched a preview of Ken Burns' latest work. "The Vietnam War" is a film of how men go berserk. As it spread in Cambodia, and further into Laos, for Presidents and generals, that war was utter chaos. For soldiers in the trenches, that war was Hell on...

THE GOLDEN GUARD

THE GOLDEN GUARD

As I mentioned in my "pilot" article, I was raised in a strict Christian environment. God was everywhere, watching every move I made. One night, when I was about nine years old, my younger sister and I sneaked out of our bedrooms, down into the kitchen, to get a drink...

“Nothing compare 2 U”

“Nothing compare 2 U”

This afternoon's news about Sinead O'Conner "hits home" for me. According to press reports, she claims to have been living alone for two years, away from her family in Ireland, as "punishment" for being mentally ill, angry and suicidal. She claims to be suffering from...

I’m no longer afraid of God.

I’m no longer afraid of God.

I was raised in a strict Missouri-Synod Lutheran environment. From the time I was old enough to sit on the church pews with my little legs dangling down, I listened to our Pastor bellowing from his pulpit in thunderous tones that terrified me. Because I was so small,...
